Whisky Review: Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend

Tasting Notes:

About:
Created to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the Royal Salute 21-Year-Old Signature Blend is a premium expression from Chivas Brothers, and named for the famous 21-gun salute. Blending a selection of rare and exceptional Scotch whiskies for a minimum of 21 years, Royal Salute’s core malt is sourced from Strathisla, the oldest working distillery in the Highlands.
Appearance:
Light Amber
Nose:
Sweet notes on the nose, honey, vanilla and oak are balanced alongside some sherried fruits and sweet pear (or maybe pear drops). There’s also a light whisp of smoke.
Palate:
Very smooth on the palate, and very slightly oily. Initially fruity with flavours of orange, pear and red apple. Followed by a hit of spices, cinnamon and oak, alongside notes of buttery malted toast.
Finish:
Lingering and slightly drying, oak and light smoke.
Comments:
I can see why Royal Salute hasn’t changed since 1953, balances elements of fruit, sherry, and smoke well to create a pleasant easy drinking blended whisky.

The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend has remained unchanged since 1953. Created in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, the 21-year age statement is a tribute to the famed 21-gun salute. The blend is extremely popular in the UK and overseas. Despite the high number of other expressions and limited edition whiskies from the brand, the Royal Salute 21 remains the most famous blend from Royal Salute.

The brand is owned by Chivas Brothers, for whom Sandy Hyslop serves as Director of Blending and Inventory. As such, Sandy oversees the product of all single malt and blended whiskies across Chivas Brothers’ brands.

Recently, we were lucky enough to get the inside scoop on the Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend from the man himself. Check out Sandy’s article here.

Other famed whiskies from the brand include the 62 Gun Salute, the 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny, and the limited edition Polo Collection bottles.
