Tasting Notes:

About:
An Australian single malt first aged for seventeen years in standard-size bourbon casks and then aged for another three years in port casks. It is bottled at 84 proof and priced at $999.
Appearance:
A gorgeous amber with slight reddish highlights color exists in glass, with solid legs and thick viscosity.
Nose:
The nose on this is deep and complex, delivering immediately baked biscuits and a strong anise note. Digging below these, one notices considerations of strawberry pie, maple candy, dried cherries, a lick of oak, and graham crackers.
Palate:
The palate is light, slightly berry forward, and holds steady throughout, delivering notes like freshly baked strawberry muffins, black licorice, maraschino cherries, older oak, caramel popcorn, and a back note of slight pepper.
Finish:
The finish is mild and a just touch spicy, finishing in a moderate fashion.
Comments:
Having not tasted much super-aged Australian single malt before, discovering such a fascinating flavor profile was a treat. It is neither American single malt nor anything Scottish, but something unique. I’m unsure if it is for everyone, but those curious might see if they can find a way to get a taste of this.

Rare Hare Spirits is in the business of seeking out rare and unique whiskies from around the world to sell under their brand. A partnership between “Playboy Spirits” and Spirits Investment Partners, the latter of which was created by Marc Bushala, Co-Founder and former CEO of Angel’s Envy Bourbon, Co-Founder of Heaven’s Door Spirits with Bob Dylan, and CEO of Kentucky Gold Distilling, the venture to date has released three offerings: a 17 year Kentucky bourbon finished in XXO Cognac casks, a 60 year Cognac, and a 30 year Canadian whisky finished in Pineau Des Charentes casks.

More recently, Rare Hare has ventured to the Land Down Under, Australia, for its latest premium whisky offering.

What’s in the bottle

The whisky being reviewed here, Rare Hare The Tempest, heralds from Australia’s famed Tasmania whisky-making region. Known for hosting only a handful of craft producers scattered across the island that is Tasmania, Rare Hare ended up partnering with Hellyers Road Distillery, one of Australia’s oldest distilleries, for this release, a 20-year-old Australian single malt first aged for seventeen years in standard-size bourbon casks, and then aged for another three years in port casks.

Hellyers Road, Tasmania’s first single malt producer after that region’s version of Prohibition, employs a centuries-old pot still distillation process that spans three days, followed by a secondary slow still distillation. The water source used in the production process is described as “akin to soft rainwater, a unique characteristic not found in other regions producing single-malt whiskies.” The malt and barley used to create this small batch whisky are locally sourced and said to benefit from the rich soil and unique Tasmanian climate.

“It’s not often you get to experience the first run of something this unique and exceptional,” said Alex Moore, Master Blender for Rare Hare Spirits, when this whisky was released. “Tempest is a celebration of the Tasmanian terroir. It should be on the bucket list of any serious whiskey collector.”

Tempest, named as a nod to “Shakespeare’s tale of nature’s power and deliverance,” is bottled at 84 proof and priced at $999.
