Whisky Review: Macallan-Glenlivet 18 Year Old Cadenhead’s

Tasting Notes:

About:
A rare independent Macallan bottling from Cadenheads, this Macallan-Glenlivet 18-Year-Old was bottled at an impressive 54.9% ABV. Serge Valentin at WhiskyFun awarded this whisky an astonishing 95 points, one of this highest scoring Macallan expressions on the review site.
Appearance:
Very Dark Amber
Nose:
A very complex nose, Christmas cake and sherried raisins, alongside roasted peanuts and citrus style orange and lemon rind. There’s a hint of toffee, chocolate, and buttered brioche. Subtly underlying there’s a slight polish note, reminiscent of gun oil.
Palate:
A very traditional sherried whisky, there’s drying Oloroso, oak and cedar wood, a variety of sherry marinated fruit, prunes, and nutty notes, alongside some dark chocolate. There’s a slightly savoury note, that’s like a meaty beef stock. If you hold on the tongue, this is a thick almost chewy whisky.
Finish:
Roasted nuts and a little lemon citrus. Not as drying as expected on the finish, but the savoury flavours linger.
Comments:
A big sherried whisky, this is probably the best Macallan I’ve tried. If only the distillery released some cask strength expressions like this – a brilliant independent example from Cadenheads.

This Macallan-Glenlivet 18 Year Old is a true rarity. To date, I cannot find a record of a full-sized bottle ever being sold at auction in the UK or Europe. However, one has certainly been in the hands of Serge Valentin. The whisky reviewer sampled this dram in 2009, and the photograph on WhiskyFun seems to show a full-sized bottle. Keep your eyes out!

Cadenhead Dumpies are highly sought after amongst whisky connoisseurs and collectors. In fact, they are firm favorites of our very own Beth Squires. The dumpies are understated, with packaging not necessarily designed to catch the eye. Yet, they often contain some rare and delicious whisky. That certainly seems to ring true in this case.

Bottled sometime in the 1980s, this bottle displays the name ‘Macallan-Glenlivet’, back when using the ‘Glenlivet’ suffix was a relatively common practice. The whisky is bottled at an impressive strength of 54.9%. As any Macallan fan will know, cask-strength Macallan is exceedingly rare. As such, the inclusion of this ABV alone makes this whisky an exciting tasting prospect for any single malt scotch fan.

Don’t just take our word for it! Serge Valentin, the highly-respected whisky reviewer and founder of WhiskyFun, awarded the Macallan-Glenlivet 18 Year Old Cadenhead’s a staggering 95 points out of 100. He said:

“This is why we’re into whisky. This kind of thing happens only once or twice a year. A GTO of sherried whiskies. Why the distillery didn’t bottle more of their sherried wonders at cask strength, I don’t know. It’s also to be noted that classic oloroso-ed Macallans are very seldom to be found at independents’. Congrats to the Cadenhead people who, around 1985, decided to buy/bottle/issue this (whatever), they deserve the Légion d’Honneur.”
