Whisky Review: Macallan 1962 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt

Tasting Notes:

About:
A vintage Macallan expression, distilled in 1962 and bottled for the UK market in 1988. The Macallan 25 Year Old Anniversary series of bottlings were released from 1983 to 2004.
Appearance:
Amber
Nose:
On first impression this whisky has quite a floral and delicate sherry note. There’s notes of vanilla, orange, and milk chocolate, and I get a hint of mint and smoke in the background.
Palate:
Initially honey sweetness and quite waxy on the palate, followed by a hit of spices, ginger, pepper, and oak leading to a slight bitterness. This gives way to a fruity aspect dominated by orange, alongside a little peat smoke.
Finish:
Quite short and drying, there’s some fizzy orange and smoke but this dissipates quickly.
Comments:
I’ve not sampled a Macallan where there’s a dominant smoky flavour before, whilst the sherry doesn’t overpower. The nose is the most complex part of the whisky, the palate doesn’t quite live up as the fruity and sweet notes on the nose just fail to break through. I’d have liked a little more sweetness, but in my opinion, this is a superior whisky to the most recent Macallan Double Cask 30 Year Old release which I sampled at a tasting event recently.
The Macallan 1962 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt.

The Macallan Anniversary Malt series is one of the most famous collections by The Macallan. Although the bottles were marketed as ‘Anniversary Malts’, they were not actually bottled for the anniversary of anything. Rather, it was a marketing ploy to encourage whisky drinkers to buy bottles for birthdays and anniversaries.

As these whiskies were released between the 1980s and the early 2000s, many of them have been opened and drunk. As such, there is no way to know how many are left out there. Those who do happen to have one, however, are sitting on a very rare vintage Macallan that now sells for thousands of pounds at auction in the UK. Therefore, they have become very popular bottles for investment – they have a proven track record for price increases at auction.

The Macallan 1962 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt was bottled in 1988 at 43% ABV. In today’s market, it is very rare that somebody purchases a Macallan Anniversary Malt to drink. After all, you would be essentially drinking thousands of dollars. So, Mark Bostock was thrilled at the opportunity to sample the Macallan 1962. See above for what he had to say.

Now, you might notice that the price for The Macallan 1962 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt is astronomically high on Wine-Searcher. This is because, on top of the standard retail margins, Anniversary Malts are extremely difficult to get hold of in the US – they are more common (though still rare) in the UK. Luckily for our US-based Macallan collectors, we have three Macallan Anniversary Malts currently listed on The Whiskey Wash Shop, for the best prices you are likely to find at retail in the US. This includes a Macallan 1966 25 Year Old Anniversary Malt for just $5,507. You can see our Anniversary Malts here. We also offer free shipping to 42 US states.
