Whisky Review: Kamiki Japanese Single Malt

Tasting Notes:

About:
A Japanese single malt aged at least three years before being finished in Japanese cedar casks. It is bottled at 48% ABV.
Appearance:
A nice amber in this glass reflects almost an orange marmalade color. Moderate legs and thick viscosity support it.
Nose:
The aromatics on this upfront have a rich cereal smell, showcasing alongside a slightly damp earth node. These are supported by characteristics of green tea, a tiny amount of cedar, oatmeal cookies, and some marzipan.
Palate:
This opens with a strong gingerbread kick on the palate, offering a subtle cedar and woody note. Other things to consider here include butterscotch, cut grass, a bit of white chocolate, and a back note of pepper.
Finish:
This finish is a bit peppery and woody, ending in a short spell.
Comments:
Kamiki Japanese Single Malt is a unique bird, and I’m not sure that’s an entirely good thing. Overall, the tasting experience of this expression is a bit off and unbalanced. Overall, I find it just okay.

Kamiki Drinks is a relatively new producer of “Japanese-style” whisky produced at the Kamiki Shuzou distillery in Japan’s Soni Village of Nara. The distillery, tied to a fully restored building over a century old, draws upon the crystal-clear waters of the nearby Soni highlands for its water source.

Kamiki is relatively unique among the Japanese whisky marketplace in that the distillery uses Yoshino Sugi wood casks, also known as Japanese cedar, to finish its expressions after initial aging in other types of wood.

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, Kamiki Japanese Single Malt, was distilled and aged for at least three years and is this brand’s first single malt. After its initial aging, it went through the Japanese cedar cask finishing.

“Kamiki Shuzou Co has transformed a century-old building into a modern distillery,” said a Kamiki spokesperson at the time of this whisky’s launch. “It stands as a testament to sustainability and as a pioneering whisky facility which has woven together the rich, historical narrative of Japan with modern distillery practices. It epitomises the brand’s deep-rooted connection to Japan’s early history and its enduring cultural heritage.

“Kamiki is the first company in the world to use local Japanese casks made from Yoshino Sugi to age its whiskies and now we are delighted to bring the first Kamiki Japanese Single Malt Whisky to the market.”

Kamiki Japanese Single Malt is bottled at 48% ABV  – no immediate pricing information is available.
