Tasting Notes:

About:
A WhistlePig wheat/rye whiskey blend influenced by a Solo Stove Bonfire toasted barrel finish. It is bottled at 86 proof and priced at $74.99.
Appearance:
A typical golden-amber color profile exists in the glass for this whiskey, supported by light legs and viscosity.
Nose:
There’s a subtle sweetness on the upfront portion of the aromatics for this expression, with just a slight hint of smoke underneath. Other consideration notes include green apple, caramel, a smidge of peanut butter, oak, and a subtle cut grass.
Palate:
The toasted barrel finish is notable upfront here, with a slight smoky thing on the palate. It is joined by a bit of an oily feel alongside other notes of caramel, black pepper bitterness, a kiss of oak, some warm vanilla, toasted almonds and a back bone of green apple.
Finish:
The finish on this is underwhelming, leaving a slightly bitter, slightly smoky kick that lasts longer than it should.
Comments:
The concept of WhistlePig CampStock Wheat Whiskey is undoubtedly a neat partnership with Solo Stove with regard to creativity and product design. However, the whiskey is just ok – not incredibly exciting on the palate nor extremely dull either. In general, it left me wanting more.

WhistlePig Whiskey has long been a leader in the resurgence of rye whiskey’s popularity here in the United States. The WhistlePig of this current moment is located “off the grid,” as they call it, on a 500-acre Vermont farm. The spirits coming from here are crafted by a new generation of distillers and blenders, aiming to keep WhistlePig in its role as one of the leading independent craft whiskey makers in the country.

As WhistlePig has grown over the years, so has the whiskey categories it touches. Initially just focused on rye, the brand now releases bourbons and other so-called experimental whiskeys, starting when it can with its locally sourced ingredients and sustainable supply chain and distilling process.

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, WhistlePig CampStock Wheat Whiskey, could be considered one of those experimental offerings. Described as a “high wheat” recipe, this wheat whiskey is blended with WhistlePig’s “grain-to-glass” rye whiskey. The final blend is finished in Solo Stove Toasted Barrels for a precise char and toast profile before being bottled at 86 proof.

The Solo Stove angle comes in via a partnership with the extremely popular smokeless firepit brand. As part of the launch of this whiskey, WhistlePig, and Solo Stove coordinated things so that the distillery had time to break down their barrels to create Solo Stove’s limited edition Whiskey Barrel Firewood. Furthermore, “limited edition” and custom WhistlePig branded Solo Stove Mesa XL tabletop stoves were released to “complete the full Camp WhistlePig experience.”

“We’ve experimented with Wheat Whiskey as part of our FarmStock series and other limited editions,” said Meghan Ireland, WhistlePig Blender, when this whiskey debuted. “CampStock takes the soft and smooth wheat profile to a new level with 85% Wheat whiskey, and an innovative Solo Stove Bonfire toasted barrel finish. No cooperage had ever used a Solo Stove on their barrel toasting platform, but Independent Stave Company was up for it, and the result was incredible.”

From a pricing perspective, the Limited Edition CampStock Whiskey, Solo Stove Mesa XL, and Solo Stove Whiskey Barrel Firewood bundle runs at $199.99. At the same time, the standalone CampStock Whiskey bottles are priced at $74.99.
