Whiskey Review: Whiskey JYPSI Explorer Series

Tasting Notes:

About:
This is a blend of two six-year bourbons (Kentucky low rye and Indiana high rye) finished in French and American oak casks. It is bottled at 103 proof and priced at $69.99.
Appearance:
A warm amber with some reddish-orange overtones showcases well in the glass, reflecting moderate legs and viscosity.
Nose:
The nose offers well-rounded considerations of baking spice and oak alongside dried apricots, green apples, a hint of bubble gum, brown sugar, and a touch of maple.
Palate:
This opens on the palate with rich gingerbread cookies and a bit of baking spice, complemented by a nice oak nod, a good amount of vanilla, pears, apricots, coriander, and a kiss of brown sugar.
Finish:
The finish is fruity and spicy, offering a slightly moderate drop-off at the end.
Comments:
The Whiskey JYPSI Explorer Series is a respectable bourbon blend that is interesting enough to be noted but not interesting enough to be top-billing on a whiskey list. It is more like the top third.

Outsider Spirits was founded in 2020 as a celebrity-driven brand partnership between CMA Entertainer of the Year and 10-time GRAMMY nominee Eric Church and entrepreneur Raj Alv. Seeing itself as “a purpose-driven incubator for whiskey innovation,” it launched its first whiskey release, Whiskey JYPSI Legacy Batch 001, in May of last year. It has since gone on to win numerous awards and accolades.

Two primary lines exist for Outsider at the moment. JYPSI The Legacy Series focuses on “sourcing individual well-aged whiskey components from various origins and using cross-category blending to reconstruct a traditional mash bill rather than blending the grains before fermentation.” The other, JYPSI The Explorer Series, is “based on the harmony of unparalleled six-year aged whiskeys and unique finishing woods from around the globe.”

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, the Whiskey JYPSI Explorer Series, is on its inaugural release – a blend of two six-year-old bourbons – a low rye distilled in Kentucky and selected for its sweetness, and an Indiana high rye chosen for its spice. The combined mash bill of 66% corn, 30% rye, and 4% malted barley is then slowly reduced to 103 proof and finished using two oak varietals – French Oak (Quercus robur) from France’s famed Forest of Tronçais and American Oak (Quercus alba) from the Appalachian Mountains.

Each of these woods, the brand noted, “was specifically chosen to work in concert with the sweetness and spice of the blend – and both are steeped in rich backstories that connect their origins to the roots of country music.”

The country roots origins referenced ties to the fact the “Tronçais region was … home to early European troubadours whose musical traditions of merging melodies and poetry ultimately migrated to the Appalachian Mountains – which became the heart of America’s singer-songwriter tradition.”

“This is why I wanted to get into the whiskey business,” said Church at the time this whiskey came out. “It’s a creative process, an adventure, and a story–like music. And you never know where you’re going ‘til you get the song written or the whiskey is made.”
