Whiskey Review: Virginia Distillery Company Cider Cask Reserve American Single Malt

Tasting Notes:

About:
An American Single Malt first aged in ex-bourbon barrels for years before being finished in a combination of French calvados casks, Virginia cider barrels, and Laird’s Apple Brandy barrels. It is bottled at 93 proof and priced at $44.99.
Appearance:
This is a very light golden amber in glass, almost translucent. The legs are moderate, and the viscosity is decent.
Nose:
There’s a rich, malty-baked bread-like note on the forefront of the nose, supported by a subtle amount of green apples and pears. Other aromatics of consideration include oak, bananas foster, white chocolate, a bit of toasted almonds and hard lemon candy.
Palate:
This is punchy on the palate up front, letting you know of the apple-influenced finish. Succulent notes of green apples, baked bread, hard apple cider, pears, oak, caramel sauce, a hint of vanilla, and cacao nibs abound.
Finish:
This whiskey wraps things up nicely, delivering a touch of apple to the back throat for a good lingering time.
Comments:
Virginia Distillery Company Cider Cask Reserve American Single Malt is a treat for those who love anything apple in liquid form, bringing nice notes across the board from that world. It is a reasonably well-rounded expression and a good value for the price point.

Virginia Distillery Company, founded in 2011, has a relatively long history regarding the ongoing evolution of the American single malt whiskey category. Dr. George G. Moore built up what would eventually become a world-class distillery campus in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains in Lovingston, VA. George’s passion for single malt whisky today is carried on by his wife, Angela Moore, and their son, Gareth Moore, along with his wife, Maggie Moore, who took the helm after his passing.

The distillery uses Midwest barley to distill through its copper pot stills from Scotland, handmade by a specialty fabricator. The new make is then aged in “cask houses,” with Virginia’s hot summers and cool winters allowing their spirit, according to them, to age faster than counterparts in Scotland.
