Whiskey Review: Michter’s 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 2024

We review Michter's 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 2024, the latest iteration of this popular decade-old Kentucky rye whiskey that this time is bottled at 92.8 proof.

Tasting Notes:

About:
This is a 10-year-old Kentucky straight rye whiskey that’s single barrel in origin. It is bottled at 92.8 proof and priced at $200.
Appearance:
A gorgeous, slightly lighter amber sits in glass here, showcasing thick legs and moderate viscosity.
Nose:
Hints of warm baking spice and black pepper drift up into the nose on first smell, joined in short order by a nice helping of oak, cloves, a touch of banana, a very slight amount of mint, and a nudge of molasses.
Palate:
First tastes of this bring forth cloves, baking spice, bananas, and a nod of oak, all mixed in a nice blend. Drifting beyond this cluster, you’ll find essences of black pepper, nutmeg, green apples, and a bit of dried cherries.
Finish:
The finish here is pleasant and easygoing, offering a slight hint of spice as it fades off after a few moments.
Comments:
Michter’s 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 2024 drinks clean and easy, reflecting spice notes typical of rye but not being overly aggressive in this regard. It is consistent with previous Michter’s ryes, providing an excellent sipping experience.

Michter’s Distillery is one of the more popular Kentucky distilleries today. This brand’s legacy started in 1753 in Pennsylvania and, through many twists and turns, ultimately ended up in Kentucky under the still-ongoing leadership of Michter’s President Joseph J. Magliocco.

As Micther’s has continued to grow and evolve as one of Kentucky’s most prominent whiskey makers, so has its global recognition. In late October 2023, the UK-based publication Drinks International announced the results of a poll by an Academy of independent global whisky experts, journalists, bartenders, and drink buyers from more than 20 countries. For the first time, an American whiskey (Michter’s) was voted the World’s Most Admired Whiskey.

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, Michter’s 10 Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey 2024, was aged for a decade in Kentucky in fine-charred, new American oak barrels before being deemed ready for bottling by Dan McKee, Master Distiller, and Andrea Wilson, Master of Maturation.

Michter’s considers it “a quintessential ‘Kentucky-style’ rye that differentiates from rye whiskeys produced in IndianaCanada, and elsewhere.

“When I came to Michter’s,” said McKee when this was released, “I developed a greater appreciation for Kentucky-style rye with its additional flavor nuances that come from having more corn and more malted barley in a majority rye mashbill.”

“What strikes me about the 10 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye is its elegance and complexity without being spice dominant,” added Wilson. The spice is beautifully integrated with hints of floral notes, fruit, honey, citrus and chocolate that create a wonderfully balanced experience perfect for a summer evening.”
