Whiskey Review: Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Selection #13

Tasting Notes:

About:
A Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey twice barreled in new, charred American white oak barrels. Bottled at 107 proof and priced at $41.99.
Appearance:
There’s a lovely darker amber color, reflecting the twice-barreled consideration. Light legs and viscosity exist within.
Nose:
A deep rye cereal note on the nose is supported by a smokier banknote, likely from the double char exposure. Other notes to take in here include peppermint, cherries, a bit of caramel, some ripe bananas, and a nice hit of oak.
Palate:
This is bright and poppy on the palate, offering an initial slight smoke and a bit of bubble gum supported by bananas foster. Letting it linger brings forth further notes of cacao, nutmeg, black pepper, and oak.
Finish:
The finish is bitter and sweet, lasting a moderate amount of time.
Comments:
The Distillery Series from Jack Daniel’s always produces interesting one-off experiments, putting this behemoth distillery on par with some of the more unique offerings from its craft kin. This is one to consider getting a bottle of, especially if you like a bit of smoke in your rye whiskey.

Editor’s Note: We received a review sample of this whiskey from the brand. However, in accordance with our editorial policies, this has not influenced the outcome of our review in any way.

The Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey brand, officially registered to the U.S. government in 1866 and based in Lynchburg, Tennessee, needs little introduction. It is found in more than 170 countries and is described as “the most valuable spirits brand in the world as recognized by Interbrand.”

A considerable number of whiskeys exist under the Jack Daniel’s banner including, to name a few: Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey, Gentleman Jack Double Mellowed Tennessee Whiskey, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Tennessee Whiskey, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Apple, Jack Daniel’s Bonded, Jack Daniel’s Sinatra Select and Jack Daniel’s & Coca-Cola.

Outside of these more “common” Jack Daniel’s brands, there are some rarer offerings, such as the Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys, which is normally available at the distillery’s White Rabbit Bottle Shop and select stores in Tennessee.

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series Selection #13, is described as a Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey twice barreled in new, charred American white oak barrels. It was distilled from a grain bill of 70% rye, 12% malted barley, and 18% corn before going through the charcoal-mellow process Daniel’s is known for.

After maturation, the rye whiskey was aged for two and a half years in a second new, charred American white oak barrel.

“Our Tennessee Rye is a take on rye whiskey that is uniquely Jack Daniel’s. The 70% rye grain bill allows the whiskey to shine through with just the right amount of spiciness and boldness,” said Chris Fletcher, Jack Daniel’s Master Distiller, when this whiskey was released. “We’re excited to add a limited-edition expression to our rye lineup with this release, which introduces the whiskey to a second barreling to create a profile with even more depth and character.”
