Whiskey Review: Hard Truth MWC Farmer’s Reserve

We review Hard Truth MWC Farmer’s Reserve, a blend of Hard Truth's Chocolate Malt Rye and Sweet Mash Bourbon, which has then been rested on toasted Amburana.

Tasting Notes:

About:
This is a blend of Hard Truth’s Chocolate Malt Rye and Sweet Mash Bourbon, which has been rested on toasted Amburana. It is bottled at 106 proof and priced at $69.99.
Appearance:
This has a lovely, warm amber color in glass, with moderate legs and viscosity.
Nose:
As you dive into the aromatics, you smell a bit of candy corn and caramel up front, showcasing a toasted chestnut backbone. Other notes include vanilla, a bit of oak, some graham crackers, and a nudge of dark chocolate.
Palate:
A distinct toasted chestnut and warm chocolate note come over the palate as the sip occurs, leading into waves of vanilla, graham crackers, a nip of vanilla, moderate oak, some coriander, and a bit of toasted marshmallow.
Finish:
This finishes somewhat spicy, with a chestnut bump that lingers for a long time.
Comments:
This finished blend of two of Hard Truth’s more popular whiskey expressions hits an interesting note, with the overall flavor profile quite fascinating. It feels a bit off the path for them, but not in a bad way—kudos for trying something unique.

Hard Truth Distilling Co., a popular craft whiskey distillery located in Brown County, Indiana, is known for its award-winning sweet mash whiskeys. Among the range of expressions available from them is an interesting subset of offerings done in collaboration with Mellencamp Whiskey Co., founded by Hud Mellencamp, the son of famous singer John Mellencamp, and Levi Collison.

This collaboration, a limited series of collectible sweet mash whiskeys in support and celebration of America’s heartland farmers, heralds from Mellencamp’s connection to farming communities as the son of one of the founders of Farm Aid, a charity that assists farmers across America. Hard Truth, in conjunction with this, established the Grounded in Truth initiative, which supports local farmers in collaboration with Farm Aid.

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, Hard Truth MWC Farmer’s Reserve, is the second of the series of whiskeys done between Hard Truth and Mellencamp. This expression is a marriage of Hard Truth’s Chocolate Malt Rye and Sweet Mash Bourbon, which has then been rested on toasted Amburana, a Brazilian wood that has seen recent popularity in finished whiskeys.

“Farmer’s Reserve builds beautifully on our mission to produce great whiskeys in collaboration with Hard Truth and the local farmers that will produce the highest quality regional flavor profiles,” said Mellencamp at the time it was released.

With each bottle’s label in the series featuring original artwork by John Mellencamp, Farmer’s Reserve showcases a 1991 painting called American Boy And Girl. The two figures in the oil-on-canvas are a nod to the composition of Farmer’s Reserve, which brings two very different whiskeys together in one bottle.

Hard Truth MWC Farmer’s Reserve is bottled at 106 proof and priced at $69.99.
