Tasting Notes:

About:
A six-year bourbon with one of the highest percentages of wheated mash bills in the bourbon category at 39 percent. It is bottled at 106 proof and priced at $49.99.
Appearance:
A beautiful orange amber exists in the glass here, highlighted by moderate legs and thicker viscosity.
Nose:
The aromatics present deep, rich layers of vanilla, amaretti cookies, bright oranges, and oak, supported by brown sugar and toffee.
Palate:
There’s a nice baked bread with apricot jam opening on the palate, joined by vanilla, a slight hit of baking spice, cherries, that always present oak, a touch of maple, and a bit of orange.
Finish:
It finishes warm and succulent, offering a slightly sweet end that fades over a moderate amount of time.
Comments:
A high-wheat bourbon of this level, like the Bardstown Bourbon Origin High Wheat Bourbon, is always interesting to try. It is well-balanced, offers solid tasting, and is a good bourbon overall.

Bardstown Bourbon Company has emerged as one of the more resounding success stories in the newer wave of Kentucky distilleries. Since 2016, it has grown from a 600,000-proof gallon-per-year distillery to a top-10 American distillery by volume, custom distilling, and bottling more than 18 million proof gallons per year.

It has become known for its approach to bourbon blending, pulling from both old and new stock, various mash bills, and origins to create single-release products. It more recently launched its estate-distilled lineage of expressions in 2023, providing the company with a full range of whiskey types and styles to choose from, be it in-house, made from scratch, or sourced from other places and influenced from there.

Things have gone well for Bardstown Bourbon; in 2023, it was named Worldwide Whiskey Producer of the Year by IWSC and boasts what it describes as “the highest-rated bourbon in the world.”

What’s in the bottle

The whiskey being reviewed here, Bardstown Bourbon Origin High Wheat Bourbon, is described as having one of the highest percentage wheated mash bills in the bourbon category, at 39 percent. The rest of the mash bill consists of 53 percent corn and 8 percent malted barley.

This high wheat bourbon, which has a lower barrel entry proof, is aged six years and bottled at 106 proof.

“Once we perfected the distillate, we focused on the aging modifications that would make this whiskey best-in-class,” said Nick Smith, Director of Distillation and Head Distiller for Bardstown Bourbon Co., when this was released. “The lower barrel entry proof of 108 pulls more wood sugars in from the onset, leading to a drinking experience that is elegant and complex.”
