Whiskey Review: 15 Stars Triple Cask II Fine-Aged Bourbon

Tasting Notes:

About:
A blend of Kentucky straight bourbons finished in cognac, rum, and apple brandy casks, aged 16 and 8 years. Bottled at 103 proof, it is priced at $179.
Appearance:
There’s warmth in the orange-amber glow in glass here, showcasing moderate legs and nice viscosity.
Nose:
The nose offers an array of stone fruit and tropical notes, giving essences of apricot, bananas, dried raisins, plums, and oak, alongside supporting considerations of brown sugar, vanilla, and a hint of mango.
Palate:
As one sips it, this has some sweet and tropical fruit candy notes, bringing out essences of pineapple, guava, and banana that play in harmony with vanilla, plums, a little bit of brown sugar, a nod of oak, a wee amount of caramel, and a touch of fig.
Finish:
The finish here is definitely on the sweet side, leaving a pleasant lingering touch on your back throat that is in no hurry to fade.
Comments:
15 Stars Triple Cask II Fine-Aged Bourbon does a fine job bringing together the various elements of its bourbons and cask finishes, resulting in a pleasant sipping expression you’ll want to savor slowly so you don’t drain your bottle too quickly.

Editor’s Note: We received a review sample of this whiskey from the brand. However, in accordance with our editorial policies, this has not influenced the outcome of our review in any way.

15 Stars, founded by father and son whiskey blenders Rick and Ricky Johnson, has made a name since coming online in 2022. The brand has received over 100 of the world’s most coveted whiskey awards, including several “best in class” awards. Operations are managed out of Bardstown, Kentucky, where 15 Stars works with a partner distillery (likely Bardstown Bourbon Co.) to distill over a dozen different whiskey mash bills, some of which include unique specialty heirloom corn (black, red, white, and blue) that the family grows for its gourmet specialty popcorn business, Black Jewell Popcorn.

Additionally, 15 Stars maintains a stock of sourced aged whiskeys it releases periodically as special offerings. The brand’s name, by the way, pays homage to Kentucky as the 15th state, with Kentucky’s recognition on the second US flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes, which was authorized by President George Washington in 1795.

What’s in the bottle

15 Stars Triple Cask II Fine-Aged Bourbon, the whiskey being reviewed here, is one such bottling drawing from 15 Stars’ aged whiskey stock. A sequel to one of the brand’s more popular offerings – Triple Cask Fine-Aged Bourbon – what one has in the bottle here is a blend of Kentucky straight bourbons finished in cognac, rum, and apple brandy casks, aged 16 and 8 years.

“We are excited to bring back this fan-favorite expression for a second time,” shared Ricky Johnson at the time of this bourbon’s release. “Not only is Triple Cask II for our long-standing community in Kentucky and beyond, but we look forward to providing whiskey enthusiasts across the country the opportunity to sip on 15 STARS through this strategic partnership with RNDC.”

15 Stars Triple Cask II Fine-Aged Bourbon, bottled at 103 proof, is priced at $179.
