The Macallan has produced no shortage of incredible releases to mark its 200th anniversary in 2024. However, none have been quite as spectacular as The Macallan TIME : SPACE Collection, containing the oldest scotch whisky ever produced at a staggering 84 years old. The Macallan TIME : SPACE Collection consists of two unique releases. The first is TIME : SPACE, consisting of just 200 sets with the price on request. Based on the pricing of The Macallan Reach and The Macallan Horizon, we expect the price to be in excess of $100,000. The second is TIME : SPACE Mastery, which has an RRP of £1,100 ($1,500).
To keep things simple, and give each release the attention it deserves, I will interrogate each whisky separately. For now, let’s take a look at The Macallan TIME : SPACE – the oldest scotch whisky in the world.
The Macallan TIME : SPACE Whisky
The Macallan TIME : SPACE is a state-of-the-art dual chamber vessel that contains two incredible whiskies, demonstrating The Macallan’s commitment to quality and “the brand’s interpretation of time travel through whisky mastery.”
The first whisky is the stunning Macallan 1940 84 Year Old. Distilled when the nation was at war, Winston Churchill had begun his final term as Prime Minister, and The Battle of Britain was raging in the skies, the whisky is a true whisky time capsule, containing spirit the likes of which has not been distilled in over three-quarters of a century.

The whisky is comprised of spirit from two casks – one first-fill American oak butt, and one second-fill European oak butt, both sherry seasoned in Jerez de la Frontera.
Bottled at 43.4% ABV, the 84 Year Old is a testament to the care, attention, and patience that is involved in maturing such an old whisky, all whilst ensuring that it remains above the crucial 40% ABV threshold.
The second whisky in this release is a 2018 vintage, 5 Year Old Macallan whisky. This spirit was some of the first distilled at The Macallan’s new distillery following its grand opening in 2018. The opening of the new Macallan Distillery signaled the brand’s push towards luxury. Since then, The Macallan has successfully established itself as the pinnacle of luxury scotch whisky.

The Macallan TIME : SPACE Packaging
The TIME: SPACE is presented in bespoke dual-vessel packaging that is colored a deep red. The color has a lasting legacy within The Macallan, both reflecting the natural color of the whisky and paying tribute to The Macallan Red Collection and all that it represents.
The 84 Year Old whisky is housed in a circular decanter with a central void. In the middle sits a decanter holding the 2018 5 Year Old. As such, the outside of the circle represents the past, and the inside represents the present and future of The Macallan brand.
This dual-vessel is subsequently presented in a multi-layered American and European oak sculpture that pays tribute to the casks used to mature this incredible whisky. It is also adorned with 200 eye-catching red spikes, one for each year of The Macallan’s history.
How Much Does The Whisky Cost?
As expected, The Macallan has remained tight-lipped on the price tag for the TIME : SPACE.
In a statement that we received from The Macallan, they said: “The Macallan TIME : SPACE is the oldest, and therefore rarest, release from The Macallan, distilled in 1940 and bottled at a remarkable 84 years old.
“The Macallan has a long-established reputation for the outstanding quality and character of our whiskies, with only 200 bottles of The Macallan TIME : SPACE produced, this limited-edition whisky demonstrates the past, present, and future dedication to maturation in exceptional oak casks.
“Releasing the price on application is reflective of the rarity of this single malt and the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience it.”
With that being said, we have it on good authority that the whisky will cost £150,000 ($190,000).

“It was an absolute privilege to be able to reach back in time and select stock from the 1940’s to honour and celebrate our 200 year anniversary.
“As a Whisky Mastery Team, our roles are unique in the sense that we get to time travel – selecting whisky from the past crafted by our predecessors, whilst simultaneously laying down casks for future generations of whisky makers and consumers. To nose, taste and select whisky created over eight decades ago is an exceptionally rare occasion in the life of a whisky maker and one which I will treasure.
“For the 2018 vintage, the prospect of selecting a younger cask created a lot of excitement in the sample room – it is an opportunity to give others an insight into The Macallan’s future. This marked the first year of production in our new Distillery, which is truly a significant moment to be cherished. Through a fusion of art and science we have ensured the continuity of the character of our whisky.”
200 Years Passed, Forever To Go
Jaume Ferras, Creative Director At The Macallan, said of the collection: “The introduction of TIME : SPACE COLLECTION is an incredible way to pay respect to our 200th anniversary by celebrating the significance of those who have come before us, yet it is also a symbol of anticipation of what is to come, as we build upon our heritage and look to times ahead.”
The Hero Films
The release of The Macallan TIME : SPACE Collection will be followed by the launch of two “hero films” that will play on billboards across the globe, supporting TIME : SPACE in an international campaign.
In a press release, The Macallan stated that the films: “take audiences on a journey through a spiky world where time flows and nature protects what is most precious. The films follow two distinct stories, yet both highlight The Macallan’s intrinsic connection to nature through different characters, animals and plants.”
