The Tomintoul distillery, set in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region, is a lesser known Scotch making operation that’s been around since the 1960s. Much of what it produces goes into blends produced by parent company Angus Dundee Distillers, but it is also known for releasing some rather old single malts now and again. One of the latest of these is a 45 year old expression.
The new Tomintoul Vintage 1973 Double Wood Matured, according to those behind it, is a 45 year old Scotch single malt whisky that was first aged for more than three decades in American white oak casks. The liquid was then transferred into a hogshead originally used to age Oloroso sherry for an extended finishing period.

Only 218 bottles of this 1973 Scotch are being made available by the distillery, bottled at 44.5% ABV and released into select European and Asian markets. It is priced at £1,990, or a little above $2,600 USD. You’ll find some official tasting notes for this deep amber colored whisky below.
- Nose: Clean Sherry influence on a sweet malty layer. Intense waxy aromas merge with hints of orange citrus and Christmas pudding.
- Palate: Richly mouth-filling as notes of nuts, chocolate, mocha coffee bean and spicy oak tannins vie for supremacy.
- Finish: Dry and spicy with a rich and enduring finalé.
