Tomatin Releases 1978 Vintage Scotch From Its Warehouse 6 Collection

Tomatin Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky recently announced the fifth Scotch single malt release in its Warehouse 6 Collection, “The 1978.”
This single malt is already garnering prestigious awards, being named Gold Outstanding at the International Wine and Spirit competition. It scored 98 points and went on to win the trophy in the Single Malt Scotch Whisky 26 Years and Over category.

For this expression, cask numbers 49541 and 49542 aged peacefully in Tomatin’s Warehouse 6 since being filled on Sept. 21st, 1978.

After thirty years, the spirit was moved to first-fill Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks and laid down for a further decade, under the care of Tomatin’s distillery custodians.

More than 42 years of patience provided harmony, as the distiller’s official tasting notes find the 1978 to have aromas of stewed fruits, dark maple syrup and bursts of orange peel and bergamot. It features the flavors of dark chocolate, warming spices and salted caramel before a long, silky finish.

The 1978 clocks in at 94 proof and only 350 were bottled. Each of those 350 units is decanted into a hand-blown Glencairn Crystal decanter with copper decorations. The bottle is presented with two glasses (also Glencairn Crystal), a solid copper stopper, along with a numbered certificate detailing the journey of the whisky.

Graham Eunson, Tomatin’s master distiller, said in a prepared statement, “With more than 42 years of patience comes reward. I am extremely proud of this luxurious single malt … The 1978 is a truly remarkable expression.”

The 1978 Warehouse 6 Collection is expected to retail for £3,000 in the UK for a 70cl bottle, and is available to purchase online and from specialist retailers worldwide.
