Tomatin Adds a New Moscatel Wine Finish to Scotch Whisky Line Up

The Tomatin Distillery out of Scotland’s Highlands region has plenty of experience with secondary cask finishing. In the past, for example, they’ve done a 14-year-old expression finished in ex-Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Now again we see them going down this road, this time showcasing an expression that spent extra maturation time in barrels that formerly held sweet Portuguese wine.

The new Tomatin Moscatel Wine Finish single malt, according to those behind it, is a 46% ABV bottling that was distilled back in 2003 and aged 15 years. It was finished for the last five of these in ex-Moscatel wine barriques from Portugal. Derived from the muscat grape variety, the Moscatel influence on this whisky offers pronounced fruit flavors to the final tasting profile of this expression.

“We are delighted to be able to release such an interesting and unusual cask maturation to our range of limited edition whiskies,” said Jennifer Masson, Tomatin’s Marketing Manager, in a prepared statement. “Moscatel releases are relatively rare and tend to be limited as the casks aren’t widely available – making this expression a must-have and we expect it will prove very popular with our customers who are looking for something a little different, but still typically Tomatin.”
Plans call for over 6,000 bottles of this Scotch whisky to be released globally at a price point of £75, or close to $100 USD. You’ll find some limited official tasting notes below.

Flavours of toasted almonds and oranges, sun-dried raisins and figs, creating a sweet and creamy finish.
