The Craigellachie distillery in Scotland is known among Scotch drinkers for staying true to its traditions of whisky making, including making use of worm tubs (coiled copper tubing) to cool the spirit. Heralding from the Speyside region, it has been in operation since 1891 and is known for whisky that’s more meaty in character. Its parent company, Bacardi, has now launched from some of its older stocks a 33-year-old expression destined for global travel retail.

The Craigellachie 33-Year-Old, according to Bacardi, is part of Dewar’s Exceptional Cask Series, a limited-edition collection of rare ‘ultra-premium’ aged whisky hand-picked by John Dewars & Sons Malts Master and Master Blender Stephanie MacLeod. It is a 46% ABV expression which will be very limited in nature, with only 1,700 bottles being made available, and follows on the heels of a 31-year-old last year.

Craigellachie 33 Year Old

Plans call for this 33-year-old to be available in U.K. duty free stores at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports. It will soon be rolled out to other Dufry stores in Europe and will be available in select retailer stores in Asia Pacific later this summer. No price was immediately given and, as for tasting notes, very limited official ones suggest ‘sulhpury’ aromas, cereal complexity and exotic fruits.

“Craigellachie 33yo is an especially exciting launch for us as part of our commitment to unlocking pockets of rare aged liquids within our strategy to lead the whisky category with quality, age and provenance,” said Bacardi Global Travel Retail Managing Director Mike Birch in a prepared statement. “The Craigellachie range is popular with experienced connoisseurs as a sought-after addition to their collections.”
