Remote Scottish Distillery Isle Of Harris Wants You

As you head northwest off the coast of Scotland, some 30 miles or so over open water, you come across the remote Outer Hebrides island chain. It is here, in the Harris part of the islands, that you find the tiny, tiny village of Tarbet, population 1,916. If a new distillery on the scene in this speck of rugged, but very scenic, land has its way, that population value could double, in a virtual sort of way, via a new membership program.

The 1,916, as the program is called, aims to bring more awareness to the quality of life in Harris as well as connect whisky lovers more with the Isle of Harris Distillery. To this end, and for the sum of £400 (around $625 USD), you get the following benefits should you choose to be one of those who signs up:

  • A first release, inaugural filling of ‘The Hearach’ whisky, limited to just 1,916 bottles.
  • Your chosen name, engraved on an oak cask stave, to be displayed permanently within the distillery.
  • A specially printed and bound book about The One Nine One Six endeavour accompanied by beautiful images from photographer Laurence Winram.
  • An engraved copper card entitling you to a lifetime of free tours here at the Harris Distillery.
The Hearch whisky, according to Isle of Harris, is being distilled, matured and bottled “on the island.” It draws its water source from Abhainn Cnoc a ’Charrain, a Scottish burn (think large stream), which those behind the distillery believe to be “the softest water in all of Scotland.” It is believed by them as well their first bottles of single malt Scotch will be available within four years.
