New Glendronach Single Cask Scotch Bottlings Range Up To 43 Years Of Age

The Glendronach distillery in Scotland’s Speyside region, having been around since 1826, has some old stocks of Scotch sitting around waiting patiently to be bottled. Single cask offerings periodically emerge from these barrels as those behind Glendronach deem them ready, and now the latest batch of expressions has emerged to head to retail with a range of ages stretching from 18 to 43 years.

This 11th batch of single cask bottlings, according to Glendronach, were aged in a range of cask types, including six Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheons, two in Oloroso sherry butts and one in an Oloroso sherry puncheon. The oldest, heralding from 1971, is one of the Ximenez ones, offering to those who drink it in terms of taste “intense treacle toffee [that] floods over sour plums and roasted coffee. Harmonising waves of leather and tobacco give great depth and are balanced perfectly by a subtle toasted walnut and date back note.”

By contrast, the younger 18 year old, which was distilled in 1996, was matured in the Oloroso sherry butt. It sports a “balance of mixed candied peel and stewed dark fruits sprinkled with dark Demerara. Delicious waves of toffee, cracked barley and warm oak spices combine to give a long and elegant finish.”
