Scotland’s Glenfarclas distillery, located in the Speyside region, was founded in 1836 and has been run by the same family since 1865. This independent whisky operation is known for having some very old casks it occasionally pops open to bottle for market, and one of the latest of these is a limited edition release heralding from Fino casks.

READ THE STORYGlenfarclas, which normally uses Oloroso casks for maturing whisky, said the three Fino casks for this expression laid down in 1966 were purchased from an Edinburgh broker back in the 1960s. Fino, for those unfamiliar with it, is a sherry type like Oloroso that tends to be the driest of its kind of spirit. What this means in terms of the casks in question is that it brings out a lighter side to the typical Glenfarclas style bottling.
What’s resulted from the three Fino casks amounts to only 1,444 bottles available for global markets that have been pricing around $1,200 overseas. Each bottle comes packaged in a black leather box bearing a silver coin which features a portrait of the first member of the Grant family to own Glenfarclas.

The 1966 Fino Cask release, which is 47 years old for the curious, also marks the first in a series of six different special releases, one for each member of the family involved with running the distillery since the late 1800s.
