The Macallan 50 Years Old, 2018 Edition, according to those behind it, has aged for at least fifty long years in sherry seasoned European oak casks from Spain. It has been bottled at a rather delicate 44% ABV, and this whisky showcases itself via its natural vibrant amber color.

“After being left to mature for half a century in our exceptional sherry seasoned oak casks,” said Nick Savage, The Macallan mster distiller, in a prepared statement, “this wonderfully rare single malt is full of rich flavour and beautiful natural colour. The Macallan 50 Years Old – 2018 Release is an incredible addition to our range of unique, mature whiskies and marks another pinnacle of The Macallan whisky makers’ art.”
Plans call for a relatively small amount of this Macallan 50 year old to be released – 2oo bottles to be exact – in select locations worldwide including the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe. No immediate price was given, though we’ve seen a $36,000 USD figure floating around, and you’ll find official tasting notes below for your consideration.

- Nose: Wood vanillas open with a hint of spice. Ripe blackcurrants and an earthy tone combine with a background of subtle peat to give a rich body.
- Palate: Sweet oak vanillas, fudge and toffee coat the mouth. Distinct black peppercorns follow to provide gentle warmth with deep sweetness joining from orange peel and figs.
- Finish: Incredibly viscous mouth coating, long and slightly dry from the subtle peat notes.
