Deanston 40 Year Old Debuts In Special Wooden Box

Deanston is a brand of Scotch whisky produced at a distillery on the banks of Scotland’s River Teith. This particular facility is known for being the only Scottish location of its kind to produce its own electricity via the use of hydro-power. Deanston was opened only in the 1960s, and now one of its oldest whiskies ever – a 4o-year-old – is coming to market for acquisition.

The new Deanston 40 Year Old, according to the distillery, was stored in whisky refill casks before spending the last 10 years of its maturation in Oloroso sherry butts. It is presented in a new bottle design for Deanston which is bespoke in its consideration and secures the whisky within via a wooden cork featuring a recessed Deanston coin. This coin reportedly “harks back to the days of the cotton mill, when this was used as actual currency in the village.”

Deanston 40-Year-Old

The box this four decades old dram is housed in is custom-made for this release, complete with textured metal labels. The interior is lined with leather and sports a special plaque. Less than 500 bottles of this are being made available starting this month for around £1,000, or about $1,250 USD.

“Heavily influenced by its past, Deanston Distillery’s close-knit team have handcrafted and nurtured this special single malt using traditional equipment and methods, barley from local farmers and soft water from the River Teith,” said Carina Gous of Distell, Deanston’s parent company, in a prepared statement. “Deanston whiskies are renowned for their distinctive fresh, honeyed sweetness and the 40 Year Old is the perfect showcase of this high-quality range of Highland single malts.”

Official tasting notes for this whisky are below from Deanston. It joins other expressions in the distillery’s line up such as Virgin Oak and a 12-year-old.

Light amber in colour, it has Deanston’s distinctive notes of rich honey, which is balanced with tropical fruit, rich oak, sweet malt, vanilla fudge and a delicate hint of dried fruit. On the palate, the single malt boasts a mouth filling sweetness of pear, apples and sweet malt with a lingering honey finish.
