Bowmore Mizunara Cask Finish The New East Meets West Whisky

The Bowmore distillery out of Scotland is known for putting out some stunning whisky bottlings, there is no doubt. It was thus with much mystery and anticipation at an unveiling this week in London a new limited edition release was showcased for the first time which is an “east meets west” take on traditional Scotch.

Known as Bowmore Mizunara Cask Finish, this new limited edition whisky was talked up by Bowmore officials at the Greenwich Observatory in the United Kingdom’s capital. It is a non-age statement offering clocking in at 53.9% ABV that is being reported will price at £750 per bottle, or around $1,175 USD, when it begins hitting store shelves globally in September.

The “east meets west theme” is played up in the cask finishing. Mizunara wood, for those unfamiliar with it, is a style of Japanese oak used primarily by the Japanese whisky industry for finishing their spirit in. And indeed this is the case with the new Bowmore offering, with it first having been “matured in traditional casks at Bowmore distillery then finished in Mizunara oak,” according to a recent TTB label approval filing.

Bowmore has yet to post full details on how many bottles will make up this release, but the good folks over at Dramming have noted the expression “is limited to 2000 bottles.” They also do a good job breaking down some of the what we will call are “hidden costs” of the final pricing of this Scotch I encourage you to check out before you throw down for a bottle.

Aroma: spicy, mellow sweetness carried on a fresh ocean breeze.

Palate: sweet vanilla, cedar wood, exotic mango and honey rose blossom.

Finish: floral spice and fragrant smoke.
