Whisky Review: Talisker 8 Year The Rogue Seafury

Tasting Notes:

About:
59.7% ABV. Isle of Skye peated single malt matured 8 years in refill casks. 750ml $115.
Appearance:
Platinum blonde
Nose:
Heather smoke and saline mingle at the beginning of the nose. The malt is the showcase in the middle where it provides an earthy quality. Mushroom and oak remind me of old weathered docks. Kelp, or a more vegetal note, comes through at the end of the nose.
Palate:
The palate starts off sooty and peppery. It is sweet with honey and orange slices. The mouthfeel is oily. Overall, the whisky is salty and full of tar. However, the finish just comes to an abrupt end. The aftertaste is dry with oak.
Finish:
Comments:
The Rogue Seafury is lighter than previous Taliskers I’ve had. The flavor profile is not as palatable even though the nose offers more. The quick finish and overly oaky aftertaste make the whisky boring.

The 2021 Diageo Special Releases are here. The latest collection strays from the repetitive Rare by Nature and delves deep into thematic fables, or Legends Untold. Eight legendary Scottish distilleries are featured in the Special Releases, and the collection includes some of the most expensive whisky since the 2017 collection.

The mythical creatures relate to the distilleries based on “the hidden gems that can be found in each corner of the Scottish terrain amongst the lochs and rugged highlands.” The Talisker 8 Year is a tried and true whisky since 1830. On the shore of Loch Harport, the island’s extremes impact the whisky’s flavor profile, but the legend of a Rogue Seafury is a much better tale.

So how did this legend arise? Well, as the fable goes, “on the rugged Isle of Skye stood Talisker, an enduring distillery with a fierce protector of an otherworldly nature: the ferocious Sea Fury. Beneath the smoky, mist-draped surface of the island’s dark waters, this leviathan of the loch lay in wait, keeping watch over its ancient home, imparting the whisky that leaves its shores with its powerful and unmistakably brine-licked character.”

The Rogue Seafury features a beautiful illustration of a sea dragon you would find on old maps to mark unexplored areas. Ken Taylor has captured haunting details of this legend with his masterful artwork. Diageo goes a step further with a QR code that unlocks an immersive tasting experience and gives life to Taylor’s illustration.
