Whisky Review: Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake

Tasting Notes:

About:
Glenmorangie single malt aged in ex-bourbon barrels with a Tokaji dessert wine cask finish. No age statement. 92 proof. Around $100. Color: Old Gold
Appearance:
Nose:
I guessed it, you might have too. It smells of cake and all the delicious smells that come from a fresh baked cake. It also wafts vanilla, butter, pecan, honeycomb, and white flour. It’s a very sweet smell that’s pleasant, clean, and warming.
Palate:
There is a sweet start to the taste as you might expect. It goes down very smooth and the peat is very faint for a Glenmorangie product. The taste is less sweet than the nose but you still have those cake flavors, most notably vanilla, honey, honey and almond. The alcohol kind of takes over the sweetness.
Finish:
Comments:
This would be great for an intro to Scotch whisky tasters or the bourbon lovers since it’s on the sweeter side. The flavors are not too complex but it is very sweet and smooth. It’s easy to sip. It’s the dessert wine of whisky. If you like sweeter white wines, this would be a great whisky to buy and sip with your favorite cake.rnrnI do wish that I was able to try some of the delicious drink recipes. I’m very curious to see how it mingles and melds as a cake old fashioned or other mixed drink. It seems like this bottle is a celebration that keeps on giving.

Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake really makes a statement with it’s packaging and signature sexy bottle shape. The box is something you might give as a birthday present that doesn’t need any wrapping. It’s full of color and whimsy.

This Highland single malt Scotch whisky came to be when Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, wanted to create the magic of a cake moment. “Like so many of us, some of my favourite memories come from cake, whether it be helping my granny in her kitchen, or the pineapple birthday cake my daughter surprised me with one year. By finishing whisky in Tokaji wine casks, I’ve captured the joy of those indulgent cake moments in Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake.” — Dr Bill.

The Glenmorangie Distillery was founded in 1843 in the Scottish Highlands by founder William Matheson. Uncompromising dedication and endless creativity is something they feel they have always strived for in the quest for the perfect single malt whisky. It’s no surprise that they’ve pulled out all the stops for Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake.

Glenmorangie feels that the journey to perfection is a long road but they are willing to take it. It starts with having the tallest stills in Scotland. They are over 16 feet tall and only the lightest and purest vapors are said reach the top. Another thing they do is select what they feel are the finest oak casks and only use each barrel twice. The team says these things lead to a smoother, rounder, and more elegant whisky.

With this new whisky creation from Glenmorangie you can have your cake and eat it too, as it takes the form a non-age statement expression first aged in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in former Tokaji dessert wine casks. It has been highly recommend eating the whisky with cake or, as the distillery team calls it, a “CakeTail”. Another great way to enjoy it is the Glenmorangie A Tale of Cake Old Fashioned.
