Palate: Spices permeate the palate as well along with dry grassy and grainy notes of pine sawdust, woody hints of cigar smoke, molasses, and pepper. The 113 proof is dry and woody, the bourbon is silky and spicy, and the rye is cool and smooth. Overall, these whiskeys, each in their own individual way, would make for a fitting way to cap off a late autumn hike in the mountains.

Broken Top Mountain Whiskey’s name was inspired by the mountain range located in the eastern region of Oregon’s Cascade Range near the Three Sisters Wilderness. Broken Top mountain is the location of an extinct stratovolcano known for a jagged silhouette which was caused by glacial erosion. The naturally filtered water that runs through thousands of feet of porous volcanic rock within the Cascade Mountains is used in the making of each Broken Top Mountain whiskey.

The brand comes from Cascade Spirits, a Pacific Northwest-based spirits company where each of these expressions are sent after aging for two years at an undisclosed distillery in Indiana.

All three Broken Top Mountain Whiskeys are aged in new, charred, American oak barrels and are cut with water sourced from the Pacific Northwest’s Cascade Range. As described on the Broken Top Whiskey website, “the arid conditions and fluctuations in temperatures, unique to the region, infuse each bottle with the essence of the High Cascades. Broken Top Whiskeys reflect the adventurous spirits of the Cascades.”

Broken Top Mountain Straight Bourbon Whiskey is made from a mash of American-grown corn, rye and barley. Bottled at 87.5 proof (43.75 ABV), this bourbon has a nice complexity and good balance of flavors offering a silky texture that makes teasing out the aromas even more enjoyable. The spicy, woody flavors slightly intensify in a satisfying long finish.

Even though it’s also bottled at 87.5 proof, Broken Top Mountain Straight Rye Whiskey manages to offer a more robust whiskey experience than the straight bourbon. Made from a high-rye mash bill, it is smooth and pleasantly flavorful with a long finish of cool, crisp spices and citrus.

Broken Top Mountain 113 Proof Straight Bourbon Whiskey offers an audacious, highly complex balance of flavors. Not so much smooth as it is chewy, the slightly grainy texture gives way to a long, dry spicy finish with a piney-sawdust nuance. The high proof of this spirit delivers an abundance of rich and robust flavors with an enchanting bit of bite to it.
