Whiskey Review: Wyoming Whiskey 1872 Straight Bourbon

Tasting Notes:

About:
116 Proof (58% abv), 750ml MSRP $399.99, 150 total bottles produced, Product of Wyoming.
Appearance:
Similar to the appearance of an Amontillado Sherry or a rich cognac. The color of almond skin and an aged still.
Nose:
Aromas of cooked caramel, vanilla beans, orange zest and angel food cake.
Palate:
Flavors of sweet breads, coco, molasses and white pepper. Coats the mouth with a feeling similar to that given by cotton candy. Finish is very smooth despite the higher proof. Notes of vanilla and sassafras linger even after the portion is long gone.
Finish:
Comments:
The limited run of 150 bottles is a shame because this whiskey deserves to be tried by more than the select few who will be able to get their hands on a bottle. This bourbon is very smooth but retains an engrossing aroma and flavor. With this brand Wyoming Whiskey has offered proof that smaller distilleries can compete with the major labels even in the ultra-premium category.

A good number of bourbons made by the current big producers stick to one mash bill and tend to highlight that profile in the end result. Wyoming Whiskey has chosen to go a different route with their 1872 Straight Bourbon. They’ve made a unique blend of two nine year old bourbons; one that is made with winter wheat and the other with winter rye, creating a very limited edition brand; only 150 bottles were made for this release.

On march 1st 1872, President Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, forever enshrining the iconic park as an American institution. Eighteen years after the park was founded, the Mead family would move to Wyoming as ranchers and it would be their descendants that started Wyoming Whiskey one hundred twenty one years later, in 2011.

To celebrate the start of Yellowstone in the 19th Century, and one year after celebrating their own ten year anniversary, Wyoming Whiskey created their brand 1872 Straight Bourbon to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the park. The whiskey is a rare four grain bourbon, made from corn rye wheat and malted barley with water from the Bighorn Basin, the water source for Kirby, Wyoming, where the distillery is located.

Wyoming Whiskey 1872 Straight Bourbon is part of Wyoming Whiskey’s Wide Open Spaces series, a program that works to support Yellowstone National Park. The whiskey is also made in partnership with Yellowstone Forever, the official non-profit partner of Yellowstone Park. All sales and proceeds of 1872 Straight Bourbon Whiskey go to Yellowstone Forever to further support the park and all it does.

This isn’t the first time Wyoming whiskey has made a whiskey to honor the National Parks. They have a whole series that commemorates the beauty of Wyoming along with their normal brands, such as their Wyoming Whiskey Single Barrel Bourbon.
