Whiskey Review: Woodstone Creek Straight Bourbon Whisky (Barrel #2)

Tasting Notes:

About:
47% ABV (94 proof); five grain mash bill (two kinds of corn, malted barley, malted rye and malted wheat; about $100 per 750 ml bottle
Appearance:
Viscous, coating the inside of the glass. Deep reddish-golden tone. Honeyed amber when set up to light.
Nose:
Hot and thin, warm coconut, with a strong vanilla hit. Burnt cinnamon, 5-spice, and black walnut.
Palate:
Slightly syrupy mouthfeel. A bit prickly from the ABV, but carries through to a slightly herbaceous, if not chartreuse-like tone. All vanilla is left to the aroma. Toasted anise pulls the finish together, and lends a spicy, yet smooth, send off. Easily quaffable, and leaves the palate primed, not burnt out.

Comments:
Woodstone Creek Straight Bourbon Whisky is a solid and worldly whisky, rich in both craft and profile. This gem is sure to appeal to every whiskey drinker it is poured for. Being that they bottle by hand, and only when the distiller deems it “perfect,” there may be times this whiskey is unavailable, so snatching up a bottle when you can is advised.

Hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, a city not quite known for its spirits scene and production, Woodstone Creek Straight Bourbon Whisky could easily be considered a sleeping giant. Each step of the distilling process for this gem is performed by owner Don Outterson by hand and in small batches.

With no employees, production line, or machine bottling, Outterson is said to bottle just two to five barrels per year of whiskey only when he deems them ready. The mash bill of his signature bourbon consists of five grains, including two kinds of corn, malted barley, malted rye and malted wheat, lending to a mouthful of deep flavor that is sure to appeal to both novice whiskey drinkers and the old school alike.

With a profile this delightful, it is easy to see why he takes such pride with Woodstone Creek Straight Bourbon Whisky. Now let’s get down to the good stuff!
