Tasting Notes:

About:
Triple mash bill blended whiskey, 115 proof (57.5% ABV), 750 ml bottle SRP $199.99.
Appearance:
Burnt amber.
Nose:
Fruity and floral scents hit the nose initially, followed by notes of baking spices, lemon zest, and fresh stone fruits, with hints of sweet honey glazed walnuts and buttered corn.
Palate:
Bright and savory, the palate offers notes of maple syrup, warm spices, toffee, and the slightest hint of Red Vines licorice on the backend.
Finish:
Comments:
This is a bright and robust blended whiskey that offers a slightly rich and creamy mouthfeel with a flavor profile that’s both savory and sweet. The triple mash bill is well-balanced, producing a nicely executed complexity of flavor that leads to a delicious long finish. Overall, it’s a successful first release from this new brand that’s worth keeping an eye on.

Released in May of this year, is the first expression to launch in the forthcoming Legacy Batch series by Outsiders Spirits. The launch of Whiskey JYPSI Legacy Batch 001: The Journey comes after two years of research and development, which according to those involved was intended to create and curate “the finest possible whiskey products, processes, team, and partnerships.”

Outsiders Spirits was created and co-founded in 2020 by CMA Entertainer of the Year and Grammy Award nominee Eric Church and as his friend and business partner, entrepreneur Raj Alva. As whiskey enthusiasts but, admittedly, not yet whiskey making experts themselves, their goal is to produce whiskey that is a creative departure from whiskey and bourbon industry conventions. Church and Alva collaborated with award-winning whiskey maker and former head of Spirits Development at the Artisan Distilling Program at Michigan State University, Ari Sussman, to produce their inaugural release.

“Whiskey JYPSI celebrates doing things the unconventional way. It’s the commitment to the creative spirit, the process and the journey that excite me the most,” Church said in a prepared statement. “It’s meant to inspire others to take chances like we have – follow a different path and enjoy and experience life at its fullest.”

Bottled at 115 proof, 70% of this blended whiskey consists of a seven-year-old Indiana bourbon with a mash bill of 99% corn and 1% malt, 21% is a twenty-year-old Canadian rye with a mash bill of 91% rye and 9% malt, and 9% is a four-year-old American single malt made of 100% malted barley. The unique bottle design was inspired by traditional copper pot stills.

Whiskey JYPSI recently won Double Gold in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, which is known to only be awarded to the finest products in the world.

The second whiskey expression yet to come from Outsiders Spirits, Whiskey JYPSI Batch 002: The Alchemist, is already in the works.

Whiskey JYPSI Legacy Batch 001 is available in 38 states in partnership with ReserveBar and comes with an SRP of $199.99 for a 750 ml bottle.
