Whiskey Review: Rossville Union 2022 Barrel Proof

From Ross & Squibb Distillery, one of the largest producers of rye in the U.S., comes Rossville Union 2022 Barrel Proof, an annual limited-release straight rye whiskey. Originally known as MGP distillery (and previously Seagrams distillery), the distillery was renamed to commemorate Indiana’s long history of distillation, honoring George Ross and Squibb Distillery from Prohibition-era. Settled along the Ohio River, Ross & Squibb Distillery is located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, also known as “Whiskey City, USA.”

Barrel proof whiskeys are bottled at or near their alcohol strength when removed from the barrel, as opposed to other spirits that are diluted with water. For a distiller to label their whiskey barrel proof, they must adhere to certain regulations, and the TTB approval can be an arduous process. Official barrel proof whiskey must be bottled at “no more than two degrees of proof lower than when it came out of the barrel.”

Both barrel proof expressions and rye whiskey are rising in popularity, and Ross & Squibb Master Distiller Ian Stirsman understands the importance of creating a stand-out whiskey. He says in a prepared statement, “We’ve selected another exceptional medley of rye mash bills to satisfy even the most discriminating tastes among the ever-growing numbers of rye whiskey drinkers.”

With these higher proof whiskeys, it’s common to add a bit of water to mellow the alcohol when tasting them, but I was pleasantly surprised with my Rossville Union 2022 Barrel Proof tasting. The whiskey, a straight rye featuring a 7-year statement, is smooth and fresh. At 117.2 proof, I fully expected a four-alarm fire level of heat, and while the initial taste was on the harsher side, it quickly relaxed into a smooth, sweet finish.

Tasting Notes: Rossville Union 2022 Barrel Proof Straight Rye Whiskey

Vital Stats: Blend of straight rye mash bills. 117.2 proof (58.6% ABV). Limited edition release of 3,000 six-pack cases. SRP of $69.99/750mL.

Appearance: Light caramel in color.

Nose: Peachy notes with hints of chocolate and oak.

Palate: I was shocked at how much peach I got out of the first taste. I’ve never experienced such a pronounced essence in a rye. Accompanying the peach, I got tobacco and vanilla. The whiskey starts with a harsh mouthfeel, but quickly mellows into a smooth rye finish.
