Whiskey Review: Douglas & Todd Bourbon Cream Liqueur

Tasting Notes:

About:
15% ABV (30 proof). Rested in charred oak barrels. ~$20/750ml
Appearance:
The bottle is simple with a classic label and nice, bold font. The liqueur itself has the complexion of milk with only a tablespoon or so of chocolate syrup folded in.
Nose:
Delectable, like the first whiff of the milkshake as you dip your head in for a sip.
Palate:
The liqueur is surprisingly mild, with vanilla at the front followed by a Werther’s Original tasty finish. It is sweet without being cloying and has a wonderful hint of bourbon.

Comments:
Whether utilized as an addition to a cocktail or sipped slowly beside the fire pit, this is an enjoyable liqueur that takes me back to my childhood when sweet things ruled the world. Nowadays, I would prefer a stronger bourbon flavor. This would be interesting to add to an ice cream before it’s churned to see what the flavors are like after some time in the ice.

Handcrafted at one of Minnesota’s oldest family-owned distilleries, Douglas & Todd’s Bourbon Cream Liqueur is a small batch sipper that is smooth and creamy with only a hint of bourbon.

Since 1912, the Phillips Distilling Company has been hard at work crafting spirits while utilizing Minnesota’s natural water supply and the extreme temperatures that expand and contract the barrels during the aging process.

The reputation of the Phillips Distilling Company is said to have been built on their diverse portfolio of premium spirits with unique flavor profiles and ever-expanding concepts.

With the Douglas & Todd Bourbon Cream Liqueur, Anne McCormack, Associate Brand Manager at Phillips Distilling Company “saw an opportunity to appeal to our core Douglas & Todd fans looking to expand their liquor cabinets beyond brown spirits.”

This tasting appealed to both my whiskey loving self, as well as that small part of me that every now and again wants a mellow, creamy dessert drink.

The flavors in the Douglas & Todd Bourbon Cream Liqueur are comforting and clear, with the taste of delicate vanilla bean and a hint of butterscotch, and I could definitely see The Dude adding this to his nightly White Russian.

Sipped over ice with a splash of coffee liqueur and vodka makes for a most pleasant evening, and while I would have preferred to have the bourbon come to the front of the table on the flavor profile, this will definitely become a great addition to my liquor cabinet.
