Comments:
I very much enjoyed this whiskey from the get-go, and the more I sipped it the more enchanted I became. For 104 proof this is a deceivingly smooth bourbon, and is a whiskey to be enjoyed with friends at the end of a special evening. rn

Editor’s Note: This whiskey was provided to us as a review sample by Grain and Barrel Spirits. This in no way, per our editorial policies, influenced the final outcome of this review.

For about 100 years, from 1856 through to the 1950s, Chicken Cock Whiskey (AKA “The Famous Old Brand”) was a very popular bourbon. Grain and Barrel Spirits is now restoring this whiskey brand that started in Paris, Kentucky. The whiskey at this time remains sourced from Indiana, but those behind it have teamed up with Bardstown Bourbon Company in Bardstown, Kentucky, for the distillation and aging of what eventually looks to be a full Kentucky product again.

The newest Chicken Cock release, meanwhile, is a very special whiskey. The name sums it up quite nicely – Chicken Cock 10-Year-Old Double Barrel Bourbon. Normally when you give someone “both barrels” you are criticizing them with lots of intensity. In this case Chicken Cock’s Master Distiller Gregg Snyder has turned the “both barrels” expression on its head by giving us a magnificent double barrel bourbon.

Snyder has 40 + years of experience to draw on, and for this whiskey he selected twelve barrels of 10-year-old bourbon, marrying two barrels at a time and creating six batches. Through countless samplings, it is said, he eventually landed on the “perfect proof” at 104 proof.

Only 1,980 bottles of Chicken Cock 10-Year-Old Double Barrel Bourbon are going to be made available. If you ever have the chance to enjoy this limited edition release whiskey, be it by acquiring a bottle of your own, or by sipping a pour at your favorite whiskey bar – my advice is that you do it!

On a fun historical note, it is said that during Prohibition Chicken Cock was reportedly the house whiskey at the legendary Harlem speakeasy The Cotton Club. Chicken Cock was known as “The Famous Old Brand” and “The Whiskey in a Tin Can,” and as the story goes – Chicken Cock was smuggled in sealed tin cans and ceremoniously opened table-side.
