Whiskey Review: Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Blenders’ Select No. 001

Tasting Notes:

About:
50% ABV, 100 proof. 3 out of 10 Bulleit distillates mingle to create the Blenders’ Select No. 001. Each distillate is aged a minimum of 9 years. Created by Bulleit Blender Eboni Major. Limited edition, this whiskey is available in 18 states. 750ml $50.
Appearance:
Amber/butterscotch hard candy.
Nose:
At the forefront, I get fresh sweet mint mingled with rose. Like walking down the bulk foods aisle at a grocery store, there are a lot of dried fruit notes. The most prominent is black cherry. Dried apricot and dried plum are also present. On the backend, there is a touch of tobacco.
Palate:
Tobacco and black cherry are robust and take the spotlight, but this note blend, at times, tastes like a strong black tea or bitter tar with the charred oak in the background. French vanilla rounds out the profile. The rye spice sneaks up on you to warm you from the inside, and it also gives off a peppercorn flavor. For the finish, dried oak and cereal grain linger on the tongue. The ABV is perfect for this expression.

Comments:
Eboni Major’s blending talent shines in Bulleit’s Frontier Whiskey Blenders’ Select No. 001. The flavor is complex and makes for a fantastic sipper. Probably the best Bulleit expression I have tasted. Its high rye profile is my jam, but it stands out compared to others. I look forward to tasting the Blenders’ Select No. 002 in the future.

Eboni Major has only been in the whiskey industry since 2015. With a degree in food science and technology, Major is now the blender for Bulleit Bourbon. The process of blending is painstaking and complicated; it can take up to 20 formulas to make the perfect blend, and Major can sample up to 50 distillates and matured whiskies a day.

This year Bulleit has released the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Blenders’ Select No. 001, which Major chose three of Bulleit’s ten distillates to blend.

The Blenders’ Select No. 001, in particular, is part of Diageo’s campaign to celebrate women in the spirits industry that are behind some of our favorite brands. For this release, Major was allowed creative freedom to push boundaries and take risks. “Fruit-forward, rich and delightfully complex, Bulleit Bourbon Blenders’ Select No. 001 is a true expression of who I am as a blender,” she said in a prepared statement at the time of its release.

Bulleit Bourbon Blenders’ Select No. 001 is also the first offering in the new limited-edition Blenders’ Select series, which offers the blending team an opportunity to experiment and flex their creativity in the lab at Bulleit Distilling Co.

As a woman who enjoys whiskey, it is always nice to see more women take the spotlight in the whiskey industry. Bulleit continues to be a pioneer with their female blender. Major has showcased her talents as a blender, and I am sure she will continue to impress and make waves. Let’s see what she has offered with the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Blenders’ Select No. 001.
