In new American whiskey & bourbon releases this week, Templeton unveils a straight rye, Old Grand-Dad launches a limited 16 year old, and J. Mattingly 1845 honors veterans with CIB Bourbon.

Let’s take a closer look at these new releases.

Templeton Straight Rye Whiskey

Templeton American Whiskey has unveiled the latest addition to its impressive portfolio: Templeton Straight Rye Whiskey.

Distilled from a mash bill comprising 95% rye and 5% malted barley, the rye was matured for a minimum of four years in first-fill American oak barrels and bottled at 90 proof. Each barrel was carefully selected for bottling by the whiskey makers at Templeton.

Paying tribute to the brand’s prohibition roots, this rye whiskey is full-bodied and rich with aromas of vanilla, pineapple, toasted oak, and spice. The palate presents ripe cherries, dark chocolate, honey, and rye spice leading to a cinnamon, black pepper, and caramelized oak finish.

“As we continue to evolve from an independent bottler to a distiller, our robust innovation pipeline will ensure we continue to meet the evolving tastes of our consumers,” said Lester Brown, Head Distiller at Templeton Distillery. “This bold and complex expression reflects our dedication to crafting full-flavored, high quality rye whiskey, inspired by our storied history in rye whiskey making and fit for today’s whiskey lover.  We’re thrilled to invite both longtime fans and newcomers to experience this newest expression of Templeton”.

Templeton Straight Rye Whiskey is now retailing nationwide for an MSRP of $29.99. You can find your nearest retailer here

Old Grand-Dad 16-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Old Grand-Dad had launched a limited-edition bourbon, aged for an impressive 16 years. Paying tribute to the brand’s long legacy (the bourbon was first bottled in 1882) the Old Grand-Dad 16 Year Old is a 2024 one-time-only release.

The high-rye bourbon was aged in virgin American oak barrels and bottled at 100 proof. Tasting notes for the new release feature charred oak, leather, and caramel on the nose followed by tobacco, vanilla, and caramel on the palate. Baking spice lingers on the finish.

Old Grand-Dad 16 Year Old is now available for an SRP of $194.99 at selected retailers.

Old Grand-Dad bourbon traces its roots to the 1800s, crafted by Raymond B. Hayden as a tribute to his grandfather, Basil Hayden—a respected distiller known for his distinctive high-rye mash bill. Established in 1882, Old Grand-Dad quickly became a staple in Kentucky, revered for its quality and character. During Prohibition, it was one of the few brands allowed to be sold for medicinal purposes, which helped sustain its legacy.

 J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery CIB Fifth Edition

J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery has continued its Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) series, releasing the fifth edition of CIB Bourbon just in time for Veteran’s Day (November 11th). A portion of the profits for each bottle sold will benefit the Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Gals Warrier Foundation, which honors veterans and supports those wounded in combat as well as the families of fallen soldiers.

The Foundation has allocated the proceeds to support the Kentucky Mogadishu Mile event in 2025, enabling active-duty soldiers from the 75th Ranger Regiment, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, and Special Forces Units to participate. Each of these four units lost personnel in the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.

J. Mattingly Distillery has long been a fervent supporter of military charities, and has donated $100,000 to such causes in 2024.

“The Mattingly family has several family members who are current or former military service personnel, as well as some of our team members we work with every day at the Distillery,” said Harry Richart, president of J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery. “It’s really important for us to give back to our community and we’re honored we have such great fans of our products which allows us to give back a portion of our sales from some of our special releases to very worthy causes.”

J. Mattingly 1845 CIB Bourbon Fifth Edition was aged for five years, and was subject to the double-staving process, allowing more interaction between whiskey and wood.

Drinkers can expect pie crust, dried apples, cinnamon, and roasted malt on the nose. The palate delivers vanilla, baking spice, currants, and prunes. The long finish lingers with caramel and stone fruit. The CIB Bourbon is a limited edition release and, judging by previous launches, is expected to sell out quickly.

Priced at $155, this 127-proof bourbon is available both on-site at the J. Mattingly 1845 Distillery and online, with shipping to 46 U.S. states. The distillery, located at 20 Reilly Road in Frankfort, KY, is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
