Castle & Key Distillery has announced the release of a Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon, bottled at 52.8% ABV. This new release comes as Castle & Key celebrates the 10th anniversary of the purchase of the property, formerly the Old Taylor Distillery. The plant was extensively renovated and is now a beacon of bourbon hospitality, drawing visitors from across the states. The Castle & Key Wheated Bourbon Cask Strength was distilled from a mash bill comprising 73% white corn, 10% white winter wheat, and 17% malted barley and aged for 7 years before bottling. This age statement makes the Wheated Bourbon the oldest age-statement whiskey from Castle & Key. Tasting notes for the new release mention “Orange zest, brûléed peach, pound cake, baked nutmeg” on the nose. On the palate, you will find “ Pastry dough, red apple, black pepper, mango, walnut, white sage.” And finally, the finish is characterized by “Oatmeal cinnamon cookie with lingering dried cherry and chai.”Only 109 barrels were used in the production of this Wheated Bourbon. “Our Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon gives the most genuine and pure representation of its mashbill,” says Brett Connors, Lead Blender, Castle & Key Distillery. “White winter wheat differs from the traditional red wheat usually used in bourbon in color, protein content and gluten development, which has the ability to affect flavor. The result is a ‘wheater’ that highlights a depth and maturity of seven years in the barrel, while retaining the sweet roundness imparted by the white winter wheat. It shines without dilution, but can still be enjoyed in your favorite cocktail.”Castle & Key Wheated Bourbon Cask Strength 7 Year Old is now available for an SRP of $60 across numerous states. Michter’s Legacy Series Bomberger’s Declaration Bourbon & Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash
Michter’s is launching two whiskeys from its famed Legacy Series in the United Kingdom. Bomberger’s Declaration Bourbon & Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash will be available via selected UK retailers from October 2024 thanks to distributor, Speciality Brands. The two expressions are named after former owners of the Michter’s Distillery, which was founded in 1753 by Swiss Mennonite farmer, John Shenk. It was renamed Bomberger’s Distillery in the 1800s and finally christened Michter’s in the mid-20th century. Shenk’s Homestead Sour Mash was distilled from unique grains including malted rye, and caramel malt. The whiskey was aged in French oak from the Vosges region. These casks were naturally air-dried and seasoned for 24 months and then toasted to Michter’s specifications ready to mature the whiskey. The ‘sour mash’ process involves adding a portion of previously distilled whiskey to the next batch of whiskey. Bomberger’s Declaration Bourbon is named for the second owner of the distillery, Abraham Bomberger. The Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey uses Chinquapin oak, also naturally air-dried and seasoned for three years before being toasted. The malted rye in the recipe adds a bold and spicy note to the bourbon. Andrea Wilson, Michter’s Master of Maturation, said of the release: “This year’s release of Shenk’s and Bomberger’s is a reflection of the passion the team has for making exciting whiskeys with a thoughtful touch of exploration.”Both Michter’s whiskeys will retail for £120 via selected UK retailers.
