Johnson Reserve, an exclusive bottler of single malt scotch whisky, has unveiled a new bottling in the Masters Series: Renoir Edition.
The Renoir Edition is a single cask, single malt scotch finished in three European oak casks: Cognac, Sauvignon Blanc, and Grand Cru. Limited to just 350 bottles, the whisky is available exclusively via ballot and priced at £3,500 per bottle.
The whisky hails from an undisclosed distillery which, according to a Johnson Reserve press release, is “renowned for its proven rarity and quality.” Tasting notes for this exclusive release include orange blossom cake and pistachio cream.
The bottling is named for the French impressionist artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His masterpiece, Mère allaitant (or ‘Maternity’) is featured on the bottle, extrinsically linking the world of fine art with the world of single malt maturation.
Johnson Reserve prides itself on its maturation techniques, which involve a “flavour-forward approach”. The Renoir Edition, for example, was not divided and finished in three separate casks before being married together. Instead, the whisky was matured sequentially in the Cognac, Sauvignon Blanc, and Grand Cru casks.
Johnson Reserve On “Advancing Whisky Maturation”
Speaking about the new release, Rob Yeatman, Head of Brand Advocacy for Johnson Reserve said: “At Johnson Reserve, we are dedicated to advancing whisky maturation with a focus on flavour rather than age. Our goal is to highlight the unique flavours imparted by different woods through advanced cask maturation and finishing techniques, which is why we have chosen not to include an age statement on the bottle.
“Many collectors have opened bottles of 40 year old whisky only to be disappointed, which is why we are going beyond ageing alone. Instead, we focus on a unique approach centred around using distinctive wood properties and the flavours they impart. Through our ongoing research, we strive to understand the intricate relationship between wood and whisky. We carefully analyse each step of the process, an approach which allows us to create a layered and complex profile that is both subtle and intricate, much like the Renoir painting that adorns the bottle.”

Managing Director, Alexander Johnson, added: “We are incredibly grateful to the private collector community of whisky aficionados that embraced this new approach. We aspire to reward their loyalty and belief by continuing in years to come to create unusual, advanced, and remarkably nuanced whisky expressions.
“We are also incredibly grateful to the Scotch Whisky Association for their guidance and for generously giving their time and supporting this new approach towards advanced maturation and finishing strategies. Throughout this process, we aim to respect the time-honoured traditions of whisky making, all in the relentless pursuit of exceptional flavour.”
