There was a time back in the more genteel days of whiskey production when mighty steamboats traveled the waters of mid-American rivers with regularity, being used both for travel and also commerce. Though this era has now long passed, American Queen Steamboat Company maintains a tribute to that period that’s described as the largest steamboat ever built. This ship is getting set to now take passengers back to bourbon country in July.
The American Queen, according to the steamboat outfit, will begin in the St. Louis, Missouri area on July 4, ending its voyage in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 12. During its voyage along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers it will stop at several places in Kentucky, including the state’s bourbon capital, Louisville.

The bourbon-themed trip, among other items, will offer those who are passengers the choice of distillery tours at Jim Beam, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve. There will also be “onboard tastings and lectures [that] will be provided from Buffalo Trace representative Don Flinn, and author of Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey: An American Heritage Michael Veach.”
Price wise, expect to pay around $2,700 per person starting based upon double occupancy for the nine day affair.
