The new Woodford Reserve Barrel Finished Rye, according to those behind it, takes rye whiskey from this distillery and finishes it in a custom second barrel made of new American oak that has been lightly charred and heavily toasted. It follows in much the same steps as the more regular Double Oaked bourbon offering, only it is a different type of whiskey.

“This summer’s special rye is finished in a unique second barrel that is heavily toasted, lightly charred barrel, which brings out even more flavors,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris in a prepared statement. “It is a perfect example of Woodford Reserve bringing innovation not only to bourbon but the rye whiskey category.”
Plans call for this “rich sienna leather” colored expression to be available at the distillery and select Kentucky retailers for around $50 for a 375 ml bottle. You’ll find some official tasting notes below for your consideration from Woodford Reserve.
