Craft beverage company Swilled Dog recently announced its Double Oaked Rye Whiskey Batch #1, a limited-edition barrel finished whiskey using tight grained, American white oak sourced in West Virginia.

A statement from the West Virginia whiskey brand noted that the Double Oaked Rye is the second release in a new series of barrel finished whiskeys.

Each release in their “Innovation Series” is a blend of sourced whiskeys further aged in barrels made of West Virginia white oak.

Swilled Dog is able to impart additional layers of flavor and complexity to the final product using this technique, the blender’s notes explain.

“By using West Virginia white oak to age our whiskey, we’re able to create expressions that are truly unique and reflective of the region,” said Brooke Glover, CEO & co-founder of Swilled Dog. “The flavors and aromas of the wood are intricately tied to the terroir of West Virginia, which allows Swilled Dog to showcase the character of the state in every bottle.”

To make the Double Oaked Rye, Swilled Dog selected barrels of its 11-month rye whiskey and transferred the liquid into the West Virginia white oak casks, coopered by the WV Great Barrel Company. The whiskey is left to age for an additional 18 months in these barrels.

Swilled Dog made 482 bottles of Double Oaked Rye Whiskey, with each bottle clocking in at 122 proof.

The blender’s notes show that on the nose, the whiskey is spicy with cinnamon and cayenne notes balanced by an underlying sweetness of vanilla and caramel. On the palate, it features black pepper and cinnamon with hints of almond, stone fruit, butterscotch and a gradual sweetness. It finishes with hints of vanilla, spice and cinnamon.

Swilled Dog is a majority woman-owned, craft distillery located in Upper Tract, West Virginia, which specializes in small-batch whiskeys and bourbons and ready-to-drink cocktails. You can find Swilled Dog’s Double Oaked Rye Whiskey at select retailers throughout West Virginia and online at www.swilleddog.com.
