There are many whiskey news stories floating around the world on a given day. One of the great perks of this blog of mine is that I scan most of them looking for items I can turn into story ideas. I choose a few, and as for the rest, they go back into the Internet news waste bucket, until now. I’m going to try a little experiment at The Whiskey Wash of creating a curated blog post now and again of five to ten links I think you might find worth reading. There will also be some quaint little accompanying artwork. I hope you enjoy.
- You may think that craft rye whiskey you are drinking was distilled in a farmer’s shed from local grains, but it may actually have come from a big distillery in Indiana instead. Tsk, tsk. Not everyone really cares though as long as it is good stuff.
- How much do you think U.S. sales of Irish whiskey alone net the likes of the Jameson brand? Try $1.5 billion over ten years. That’s definitely a big pot of gold for the leprechaun at the end of the whiskey rainbow.
- American sales of overseas whisky, besides padding the wallets of the Irish, are also feeding the Scots working for Diageo. It is nice to see our drinking habits are supporting the global economy.
- And, in the vein of fueling economies, the once mighty metropolis of Detroit, now widely abandoned to the wilds, is seeing some new innovation in the form of a planned whiskey distillery. It will join Two James Spirits in trying to restore the city’s pre-Prohibition whiskey making ways.
- Heading quickly back to Scotland, we see whiskey revitalization continues there also as the ancient dunnage warehouses of the Coleburn Distillery come back to life after nearly three decades to once again house aging casks filled with the good stuff.
- Let’s get spirits nerdy for a moment and consider the focal length of whiskey, shall we?
- New York State, on the craft whiskey frontier because of the distilleries there, just had one of its own put into barrel a “New York only” offering that’s all local grains for the spirits and local materials for the casks.
- Want a social network oh whiskey lover to call your own so you no longer see kitten videos in your friends’ news stream? There’s now a an app for that.
