Four Whiskeys to Beat the Winter Doldrums

There’s no getting around it: February has mostly been quite a bummer. Spring is still weeks away, and it can feel like the cold will never quit.

We’ll be the first to say it: whiskey helps with that. Here are the whiskeys we’re turning to in an effort to stave off winter’s chill and dream of warmer days ahead.

Lagavulin Distiller’s Edition

Sometimes the best tactic is to lean in. Pour yourself a splash of Lagavulin and imagine you’re tucked away cozy in your cottage on a bleak, windswept island moor while watching a storm bluster in over the Atlantic, then tell me you don’t secretly love winter after all. The Distiller’s Edition spends time in sherry casks, giving it a sweeter, more substantial vibe than the canonical 16-year-old.

Kavalan Classic Single Malt Whisky

Made in warm, humid Taiwan, Kavalan has been racking up awards like crazy. All that heat encourages interaction between the barrel and the whiskey, leading to faster maturation and intense wood character. Their single malt whisky has hints of tropical fruit and coconut; think of it like a tropical vacation for your mouth, minus the sunburn and airport layovers.

Blanton’s Single Barrel

Marketed as “the original single barrel bourbon whiskey,” Blanton’s has a way of brightening even the dreariest days. Spicy and citrus-forward, it’s lively and light without being wimpy. Ponder the horse and jockey adorning the top of the cork and cast your thoughts ahead to sun, springtime, and Derby Day. It’s not so far, right?

Koval Four Grain

Made in icy Chicago, Koval’s Four Grain whiskey nevertheless manages to lead with tropical fruit front and center, reminding one of our reviewers of bananas foster over vanilla ice cream. Despite a fruity nose, the palate is substantial, just the thing to warm you up after yet another snowy slog home from work.
