Woodford Reserve Frosty Four Wood a Weather-Influenced Bourbon

Woodford Reserve Frosty Four WoodKentucky bourbon favorite Woodford Reserve has a new whiskey out this week, available to those lucky enough to visit its historic distillery in the heart of thoroughbred country (it is also at “select” retailers). It is the latest from their Distillery Series, and it’s called Frosty Four Wood.

Woodford Reserve Frosty Four Wood, according to the distillery, is a special batching created by master distiller Chris Morris that consists of mature bourbon aged in American Oak and finished in barrels made from maple wood, sherry wood, and port casks. It is similar in scope to Woodford’s 2012 Master Collection Four Wood release, but the twist with Frosty is that it additionally ended up being

exposed to record-low temperatures during the 2013 Polar Vortex, resulting in flocking, or mineral precipitation. Filtration techniques produced a more fruit-forward whiskey with maple hints.

“Frosty Four Wood is the last of a historic whiskey specialty, as the original Four Wood was the first of its kind to touch four different barrels,” said Morris in a statement. “It represents a rare moment that extends beyond bourbon and amplifies current flavors found in Woodford Reserve.”

This limited edition bourbon is bottled at 90.4 proof and prices at around $50 for a 375 ml bottle. Official tasting notes for this rich, orange, honey-colored whiskey from Woodford Reserve are below:

Aroma: Full, with rich holiday spice notes and a dried fruit medley (fig, raisin, dried cherry, dried apricot) character with hints of maple syrup and coffee.

Flavor: Warm and full-bodied with dried fruit character that layers over a nutty, spicy range of honeyed oak and maple syrup.

Finish: Long, warm, and spicy.

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
