St. George Single Malt Whiskey, Lot 15, Heads To Retail

St. George Single Malt Whiskey, Lot 15While much of the buzz around American whiskey releases during the fall focuses upon the rush of all things bourbon, American single malt drinkers in the know quietly queue up for the release of St. George Single Malt Whiskey. It is now in its 15th iteration, known also as Lot 15, and we are happy to be one of the first to bring you release details on it.

St. George Single Malt Whiskey, Lot 15, is produced by St. George Spirits out of California. One of the pioneers in the craft spirits movement, they’ve been making their whiskey and other spirits since 1982. The whiskey in particular is a big deal to them, as master distiller Lance Winters reportedly first got into the business of craft distilling to produce just such a fine bottling as you are reading about now.

The Lot 15 batch, like those before it, is limited in release. This time around there are only 3,000 bottles making their way to retail as I write this. It will likely be a highly sought after expression by those who are fans of this brand, especially given the fact Lot 14 from last year was named Craft Whiskey of the Year by Whisky Advocate.

Information on Lot 15 from St. George indicates it is a blend of whiskies drawn from barrels aging between 4 and 16 years, with the cask types including Tennessee whiskey cask, used Kentucky bourbon cask, used French and American oak wine cask, used port cask, used apple brandy cask and used late-harvest Semillon wine cask. The mash bill is 100% barley malt.

Official tasting notes for this American single malt are below, courtesy of the distillery. It is set to price at around $90 per bottle.

Nose: Lavender honey, tangerines, watermelon, and an undercurrent of sandalwood. Evolves into jackfruit, pineapple, and the brightness of apple cider. Eventually these fruitier aromatics give way to chocolate and butterscotch. Further time in glass will show lighter cocoa, Saigon cinnamon, salted pecans, cream, coffee, flint and soil all as parts of the classic St. George chocolate heartstring. As your glass dries the salty saline aromatics give a sense of drying fennel.

Palate: Pale and crystal malts broadly show across the palate and are soon deepened by dusty cocoa and bittersweet chocolate notes that go towards molé (cinnamon and nutmeg). The spice on the back palate expands with further impressions of cream, butter, clover honey, honey roasted peanuts, and the sweet citrus Semillon wine. The malts continue to show throughout and after a few sips the sweetness of licorice and chocolate mint give a cooling sensation as the long finish goes towards gunpowder tea and ale.

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
