Old Forester 2015 Birthday Bourbon Ready To Party

It is double your fun day here at The Whiskey Wash for Old Forester Bourbon, in part to celebrate along with them belated birthday wishes to their founder George Garvin Brown. We’ve already published a review of the Old Forester 1897 Bottled in Bond Bourbon and now, specific to the September 2nd anniversary of Brown himself, we bring you word of the 13th limited edition release of Old Forester Birthday Bourbon.

As was the case with the 2013 and 2014 releases of this yearly bourbon, Old Forester/Brown-Forman master distiller Chris Morris selected bourbon from barrels from a single day of production, this time being June 13, 2003, for this expression. What’s now in bottle and filtering out to retail is a 12 year old whiskey which was bottled at a straight up 100 proof.

“This particular lot of barrels is unusual because it matured in the same warehouse location instead of multiple sites,” said Morris in a statement. “The lot aged near a window and close to a heat cycling duct, exposing all of the barrels to very high temperatures, resulting in the very robust, intense wood-derived characteristics exhibited by this exceptional vintage.”

Official tasting notes for the Old Forester 2015 Birthday Bourbon are below for your consideration, as well as a short video from the distillery about its selection. As for price, expect to pay somewhere between $70 and $80 (likely more depending upon markups) for one of the vintage looking bottles from the just 2,200 cases being released.

  • Nose: Layers of oak, both resinous and toasted, merge with a medley of tobacco leaf, dry herbs and nut character.
  • Taste: Warm mulled spice and nutty notes, all subtly sweetened with a touch of honey.
  • Finish: Warming and dry, with a long, smooth, nutty character.
