Jack Teeling is bringing the family name and whiskey business back to the downtown area of Newmarket in the heart of Dublin, Ireland with the first new distillery there in the last 125 years. The family long has had roots in Irish whiskey, and already has a number of bottlings on the market as a result under the Teeling Whiskey label, including its flagship Single Malt Irish Whiskey. This whiskey is the focus of this review.
The Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey is a non-age statement expression made from 100% malted barley drawn from a range of different ages, including whiskey distilled in 1991, and five different wine cask (sherry, port, madeira, white Burgundy and cabernet sauvignon) finishes. It is bottled at 46% with no chill filtration.
Here are my tasting notes after trying this golden honey colored whiskey from a sample provided by the distillery:
Nose – toffee, citrus
Palate – malted barley, fruit, spices, wonderful mouth feel- velvet and smoke of cloves
Finish – long sweet, slight heat, clean, almost a peatness smoke to it, but very slight.
Overall I find the Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey a very well balanced single malt that is very approachable and with a very complex palate.
