Connecticut Gets On Aged Craft Whiskey Bandwagon With Onyx Secret Stash Reserve

onyxOne state yet to see much in the way of a craft whiskey movement is Connecticut, despite the fact that, at one point in its long history, it hosted dozens of distilleries making spirits. This is changing though as Onyx Spirits, based out of the city of East Hartford, recently unveiled its third whiskey offering, the second time of which it is lightly aged.

Known as Onyx Secret Stash Reserve, this new young whiskey is the more regularly to be produced off shoot of an experiment done over the last couple years releasing aged spirit in private barrels to select retailers around the state. It was apparently enough of a hit with the locals that Onyx has now moved into a new roughly $35 bottling that began distribution in December to liquor stores across Connecticut.

The whiskey, said to be made from “corn, malted grains, and Connecticut spring water,” was produced “in small, 55-gallon stills closely mimic[ing] the process Connecticut distilleries used over 300 years ago.” Select tasting notes indicate “maple syrup, brown spice, and almond.”
