Late last year Scotch whisky distillery Macallan debuted a special limited edition offering tied to its popular Masters of Photography bottling series. Available initially only in Asian travel retail markets, but now likely floating around other markets as well, is the Macallan Masters of Photography: Capsule Edition: Daido Moriyama – Remix, Remixed.
Daido Moriyama is a photographer well known “for his images depicting the breakdown of traditional values in post-war Japan.” The limited release whisky chosen to honor him is helping celebrate his 75th birthday and is named Remix, which also happens to be the name of a book with his work in it. Accompanying the bottle for those who pay the $1,750 cost is a specially bound book containing some of Moriyama’s photos imprinted upon a series of inspired French fold pages and hand signed by the photographer himself.
The one-off cask strength single malt Scotch whisky from The Macallan that is in the bottle lacks an age statement and was matured in a first fill sherry seasoned oak cask (cask no. 15,245). Said to be one of the darkest single casks ever released by the distillery, official tasting notes are as follows for the 500 bottle release.
Nose: Opulent and intense. The cask shows its darker side. Raisin, fig, date and clove are the heavyweights of the group supported by ripe apple, black cherry, chocolate, ginger and resinous wood.
Palate: Viscous, orange peel, citrus oil. Ginger, wood spices and clove. Treacle shows later with a depth of sweetness then bitter chocolate
Finish: Long and warming
