Macallan M Gets All Fancy In Special Crystal Decanter

The-Macallan-M-549x1024Another day, another rare and expensive Scotch to mention. This time around we take a look at Macallan Distillery, one of the largest Scottish whiskey brands out there. It is pushing a limited edition, £3000 expression in a specially crafted crystal decanter known as Macallan M.

Macallan M, according to the distillery, is a non age mentioned single malt that at one point was laid down in Spanish oak sherry casks. It was bottled at 44.7% ABV and, as for tasting notes, well:

  • Colour: Rosewood
  • Nose:  dried fruits ripen, then soften showing off a velvet sateen. Vanilla accompanies green apple hand in hand neither taking the lead. Ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon create an ensemble in the background, with polished oak offering to overstate yet never does but plays with a depth of resinous, juicy oranges
  • Palate: opens rich in wood spices slowly showing all their viscosity. Wood smoke flits in and out. The heavier raisin and sultana flavours then take over, meandering to a long full finish

While the whiskey is what is the star of the show in this offering, the special crystal decanters are certainly nothing to sneeze at. The 1,750 bottles were the fruits of a partnership between the distillery, creative director Fabien Baron and crystal makers Lalique. Each one is engraved with its own individual number, and each of the six facets of the vessel holding this liquid gold represent some form of homage to Macallan’s heritage.
