Among the distilleries on the famous Scottish island of Islay, the Kilchoman distillery is noted for not only being one of the smallest but also the first built there in 124 years. It is considered a farm distillery, meaning it uses barley grown on site and malted there as well. One of its newest releases reflects the fact it hasn’t been around all that long, but also showcases it as one to take note of amongst all the Scotch producers out there.
Kilchoman 2007 Vintage, of which only 10,000 bottles are being made available, prices for around £53 for a 700 ml bottle. This particular expression comes from a vatting of six-year-old fresh bourbon barrels and is the oldest single malt the distillery has released to date.
As for tasting notes, the distillers feel the 2007 offering has a “smoky vanilla and caramel nose with cooked lemon and citrus fruits” that opens into the mouth “with hints of butterscotch and soft citrus fruit, complimented by a lasting sweetness that blends with the peaty and fruity finish.”
It was bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume.
